Chemicals in Tap Water – Hidden Secrets Revealed

tap-waterDrinking tap water can be very harmful to your health, which is why most households have started buying bottled water instead. There are many city governments that are trying to encourage you to drink tap water instead of buying bottled water for various reasons. In this article we will talk about some of the reasons why they are doing this.

Yes, there are chemicals in tap water and exposure to them is detrimental to your long-term health but chemical contaminants can be easily removed with affordable home filtration devices.

Unlike those city officials, I will not encourage anyone to drink tap water that has not been filtered at home, but I do believe that everyone needs to stop drinking so much bottled water. The affect that the bottling industry is having on our freshwater source is huge.

You see, the industry wastes too much freshwater and our supplies are not unlimited. There have been record droughts around the world. In San Francisco, California, one of the cities that are encouraging residents to drink tap water, residents may have to ration their water usage this year, cutting back on showers and foregoing a green lawn.

The even bigger problem that San Francisco, CA is having right now, on top of this tremendous drought, is the fact that places that require a good amount of water aren’t getting it. Cities and farms right now are getting about 15% of the amount that they request each year, which is reducing the harvests.

They claim that agricultural demands require more than they do but agriculture is necessary, bottled-water is NOT. Many companies don’t even remove the chemicals in tap water before they bottle it and sell it to you.

You see everyday people buy millions of bottles of water and don’t realize that most of them are made by major companies. Most are unaware that Coca-Cola makes Dasani, and Pepsi bottling company makes Aquafina. With that said, you would think that they really take great care to filter the water, however these two use a publicly treated water supply.

Because of the volume they use and water wasted, having a filtering system for your home will be much more effective at clearing the contaminants out of your water supply. There are such filtering systems that use granular carbon and other filtering methods to get all the bad bacteria and parasites out, while preserving all the minerals in your water supply.

There are a lot of cancer causing contaminants that riddle the public water supply everyday. These contaminants are referred to by many as THM (trihalomethanes) which are found typically in water that is high in chlorine and chlorination byproducts.

The best thing for you to do is to make sure you do a lot of research before buying a water system to fit your home. You must first do testing in your water to find out exactly what’s in there. Once you’ve done that, you can then start researching what water filtering systems will not only get rid of the bad but preserve the minerals. So get out there and get started going forward with a cleaner healthier water supply in your home.

Water is life. But most of us aren't aware about it. After knowing that there are chemicals in tap water, we have started to drink bottled water that is available in the market. But after reading the article I have come to know that bottled water also have chemicals. Most of the companies are not aware about filtering the water properly. So which we think as a solution is not a solution but another problem. I agree with the writer that filtering water in our house is the best solution to all these problems.
Thanks for sharing such an important post.

Great posting about the hidden dangers of tap water.

Have you read the recent NYT expose on tap water? Scary stuff:

    http://breakfree411.blogspot.com/2009/09/not-so-safe-tap-water-ny-times-finds-40.html

But you forgot another alternative to bottled water -- a water cooler in your home.

The "safety" of tap water can be questionable, as it may be laced with pharmaceuticals or bacteria that haven't been filtered out. Filters often don't remove those contaminants.

My company Primo Water has redefined the water cooler; our company has a number of attractive bottom-loading units. And we have an innovative exchange program that allows our customers to switch out their empties for full bottles at at local grocery, home improvement and discount stores.

But the biggest selling point is that Primo Water is 99.9 percent pure. You can't get that with tap water -- filtered or not.

This is a very good article! I think the more awareness we bring to the issue of poor and toxic water that is provided in our tap the more people will make small changes for their families health. We lived in a suburb of Minneapolis,Mn for a few years and our handyman in our building had some exotic fish in a tank,he put the tap water in the fish tank and all of the fish died. When we drank the water we had very upset stomachs and the kids even vomitted. This has to tell people something about the water we are provided with. Needless to say we have had only bottled water since. I don't think it matters where you live the water is getting bad everywhere. Thank you for this article, I hope others see this article and make better choices for water other than the tap.
  • That's scary that the water killed fish and made you sick! Would filtering the water have helped? Not sure in that situation. What ever came of the water there?
